The idea to establish a research group in the Austrian Academy of Sciences working on smart sensor systems was developed in 2002. The positive evaluation of the concept by an international board of experts led to the foundation of the Research Unit for Integrated Sensor Systems in 2004. After a four years' start-up phase and a successful evaluation the research unit became an institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2009.

The Institute for Integrated Sensor Systems is located at the technolgy and research centre TFZ in Wiener Neustadt. This centre is home for several research groups in the fields of medical technology, electro chemistry, tribology, and micro systems and therefore forms an innovative environment for interdisciplinary research. Wiener Neustadt is one of the technopols of the Province of Lower Austria, where the activities for technology research are concentrated. The interdisciplinary and application-open approach of the institute perfectly contributes to this environment.

The institute is co-financed by the Province of Lower Austria within the Technopol programme. Nevertheless, a major part of the overall budget stems from national and European research funds as well as industry-related research projects.
